Story
In October I'm taking part in a 280 mile cycle ride from Prideaux Place in Cornwall to Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne in Nantes, France in memory of my best friend's Mum, Pat Wheeler, my step-father, Keith Woodcock and my uncle, Pete Marriott who each ended their lives at Mount Edgecumbe Hospice.
Although I live in Shropshire, I am from Cornwall and I grew up here and went to school in the same town as Mount Edgecumbe Hospice.
Pat was a tireless fundraiser for Cornwall Hospice Care and spent most of her time raising money for the hospice for over 20 years. It was a complete shock when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and after a short illness was admitted herself to the care of the hospice staff. She was a wonderful lady and a great support to me growing up and later gave that love to my children.
My Step-Dad, Keith Woodcock and my Uncle Pete were also given expert end of life care in the hospice and their last days were made as comfortable as possible.
The support we were given as a family was so unique and we were able to stay and spend as much time as possible with them. I can't imagine how we would have coped without the hospice and the staff at that very sad and emotional time.
With only 20% of funding coming from Cornwall's NHS Commissioners, the rest is from fundraising across the County.
