Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Palli Unnayan Seva Samiti (PUSS) is a school for underprivileged girls in Orissa, the poorest state in India. It is a permanent home to a number of orphans and abandoned babies, providing them with a loving and secure family. It also provides board and a full education to hundreds or girls from a variety of disadvantaged backgrounds, who would otherwise be condemned to leprosy, sexworking, begging, or whatever other form of destitution they were born into. Furthermore, the school provides care to a number of abandoned girls battling life-threatening illnesses, including HIV, meningitis and TB who would otherwise have been left to die.
It is for my Indian sisters that I am going to live off £1 per day for 10 days. This means giving up my favourite treats... coffee, chewing gum and chocolate! No fresh fruit and veg, no alcohol, no meat.... just plenty of porridge oats, rice and things in tins.
I hope by doing this, I can help the school to continue their amazing work saving so many little girls. It costs only £15 a month to look after and educate a girl at the school, which is only 50p per day. There are just over 400 children, so it costs £200 to run the school each day; feeding, clothing, paying the fantastic teachers and staff and covering the running costs of the building. Friends of the Children of Orissa is a UK based charity set up to assist the school, and has absolutely no administration, transport, office or fund raising costs, in the UK or in India. The school receives no Indian government funding; it relies solely on the generosity of the local community and donations from Friends of the Children of Orissa.
