Story

Liz (as known by her friends and family), was my mum and she was 32 years old, on 1st February 1979, when she died of a brain tumour. She was a newly qualified teacher of English in a large multicultural school in Moseley, Birmingham.

She had spent her early twenties, as a single parent, caring for me, her daughter whilst working night and day and studying to become a teacher. she started to have "headaches"  for which the local GP gave her paracetamol - no questions asked. it wasn't for a couple of years that things were investigated more thoroughly at the insistence of her mother - a trained nurse - who had become increasingly concerned with the frequency of the headaches and dizzy spells.  Then the tumour was discovered and the symptoms worsened with blackouts and incredible painful, blinding headaches.

Unfortunately, the tests came too late and just before they were to operate on a tumour that was now the size of a golf ball, she died.

My mum, was a strong, and outgoing, charismatic and beautiful woman and she gave me, in those first 11 years of my life the zest for life that she nurtured in her very short time in this world. At her funeral, the church was so full that there were people standing outside the doors. She was a person who inspired ( a lot of these people were her pupils). And now she inspires me to make a mark and to help raise money for more research to be undertaken to help fight this dreadful silent cancer.

After an eventful year, I have decided to make some positive steps towards changing the way things are and this is one that I hope will benefit many people. You never get over the loss of a parent. I would like to help save some lives, someone's mother or father, brother or sister, aunt, uncle... whoever... they all have a right to life.
