Story
This year, as a family our lives where turned upside down when our son, Kieran age 22 decided in that split second of a very bad day that the world would be better off without him. Kieran’s battles were bigger than him, yet somehow he managed to hide it so well with a joke and a smile. In the last few months he started to open up about how he felt yet despite all our encouragement, support and love, his head thoughts became stronger than his heart thoughts on that particular day. Kieran (or Keeg as he was known) was literally on the edge of change with professional help set in place to help him get better...which is one of the reasons we have found this so hard. Our family is missing a piece of it and it will never be the same. Last year we started a running group with one of the aims to help him get stronger mentally & physically and give him so focus. We would run and chat through stuff which proved invaluable in allowing him to open up more. I’m so glad I have precious memories of these runs.He loved fitness and between deep conversations he’d be telling me about all the muscles we’d be working and the benefits of running for our health. I’m running the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise awareness but also to prove our running wasn’t in vain and was for good. I’ll be running as a total ‘race’ novice in fact this will be my first ever race. I know if Keeg were here he would be cheering me on, which spurs me on to get across that finish line. If the pain of a few hours running raises some money to make a difference in some other persons life who is struggling with mental health, then it’s worth every step I run.
