Story
One More City is an annual cycling campaign for Breast Cancer awareness month (October). Moving from city to city, we start from where the previous year’s ride left off. Last year it was London to Paris in 24 hours. This year its Paris to Amsterdam - 570km over 3 days.
Much breast cancer awareness, campaigning and research is focused on prevention and detection of primary cancer - when the disease is confined to breast and lymph nodes. Early diagnosis provides the best chance for survival as the disease is curable in most people at this stage.
However, an estimated 20-30% of primary cancers spread to other organs. These ‘secondary cancers' are no longer curable and those with secondary cancer will spend the rest of their lives on some form of treatment and living with the realities of an inevitably foreshortened life.
The ethos of One More City is the same - the journey is never over. There's always One More City. More kilometres to ride, climbs to conquer, tears to cry and challenges to face.
Our fundraising will enable Imperial College London to recruit a Ph.D student - which costs £80,000 for 3 years. This student will join the breast cancer team in their efforts to identify the mechanisms underlying resistance to cancer drugs and for developing methods for classifying breast cancer patients on the basis of their gene expression profiles and response to therapies. This work goes towards defining the optimal treatment regimens for each breast cancer patient. It is through such studies that cancer therapies can be individualised, ensuring that patients receive only therapies most likely to benefit them, and are not subjected to unnecessary or ineffective treatments.
Funds raised by One More City will be held in a special fund until the £80,000 threshold is reached and a Ph.D student recruited.
