Story
Yemen is facing the largest humanitarian crisis in the world right now. The country has been in violent conflict for 5 years, which has already had a devastating effect on the country. Not only are children constantly at unease living in fear for theirs and their families lives due to the war; but they also fear for their future if they do survive, as 2 million children are out of school. children are also at a huge risk of death by severe acute malnutrition, cholera and dysentery. Yemen now face an additional threat from COVID-19. In a place where people’s immunity is already extremely low, hand washing and basic hygiene are not possible, and a huge number of hospitals are not functioning, the pandemic has and will cause a huge amount of suffering and death. Over 12 million children are in need of urgent humanitarian aid, hospitals need support, children need to be treated for malnutrition before it’s too late, health workers need PPE.. and UNICEF is providing these things. However they need more support to reach more people, and this is what we, as a club, will be fundraising for. The University of Birmingham Weightlifting club will be doing as many air squats as possible throughout July, in order to fundraise for UNICEF’s Yemen appeal. Our goal is 30,000 but we aim to far exceed this goal and set new goals throughout the month. Please help the weightlifting club in whatever way you can to support the crisis in Yemen, by donating to the cause using the link below, and following our squat challenge progress on Facebook and Instagram.
