We Make the Difference to sick kids and their families in Tayside

Story

As a group of 14 child nursing students, from the University of Dundee we will be participating in a skydive to raise vital funds towards the Archie Foundation- Tayside Appeal. We will be jumping from 10,000 ft on the Saturday the 9th of June 2018.

The Archie Foundation are a charity who are called upon every year to support countless sick children and their families. They exist in order to make a huge difference for local children when they are sick, in hospital or in need of long-term healthcare. One of the major issues that has been identified within Ninewells hospital is that there is only one children's operating theatre within Ward 30, therefore If there was an emergency that occurred involving a child when the theatre was in use then they would have to be transferred to adult services or wait until the theatre was unoccupied. Ward 30 also deals with some dental cases, if children are anxious they can come down to the suite prior to their surgery to be in a child friendly environment and they may be transferred to the ward post surgery if they have had a lot of work completed. Currently, all child dental surgeries are completed in adult services which is not the best possible environment for a child medically and emotionally. Ward 29 and the outpatients are on level 4 whereas ward 30 and the single children's operating theatre are on level 6 therefore this creates a daunting transferral for children when they are being moved from ward 30 to ward 29. This also makes it harder for staff to liaise with the other children's facilities within the hospital.

NHS tayside and the Archie Foundation are therefore working together to build not just one but two world class theatres, this would make a huge difference to the lives of children, their families and the staff who work hard everyday to ensure that they deliver the best care possible. NHS Tayside has its own budget for a basic theatre suite but with the additional funds of 2 million pounds raised from the Archie Foundation this will help to build this amazing theatre suite and ensure that it revolves around child and family centred care.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated and will benefit the lives of children in Tayside and further afield.
