Story
Hi all,
On September 30th I and Joe Franklin will be running 100 miles in one go, starting on the Friday evening and finishing on Saturday afternoon.
The reason for doing this is due to the inspiration that Bob Munro, Joe’s dad, has given me through the resilience he has shown over the last 10 years in his battle against Myeloma. A 100 mile run is a mere patch on the journey Bob has battled through. He is Ultra Bob!!!
Bob’s been fortunate to ride the explosion in new Myeloma drugs which have kept him in the game for the past 10 years. The R&D for these drugs has been massively accelerated by patient inspired fund raising, such as Bob’s London Paris Ride, and numerous family & friend’s events, which funnel money into Myeloma UK’s Clinical Trials and Advocacy work.
By January 2022 Bob had exhausted all the licensed drugs but was lucky enough to get on a trial for a completely new experimental class of drug. He’s since suffered 6 months of the worst bunch of side effects and bad luck, including viral infections, Covid, a damaged sacrum leaving him unable to walk and requiring radiotherapy, his 8th rib fracture and severe anaemia (needing Lance Armstrong style EPO and blood transfusions). But the results have been spectacular, smashing his Myeloma to the lowest levels since diagnosis. Proof, if ever you needed it, of the value of research, clinical trials and the fund raising that helps make it possible.
It really has been amazing to see the tangible difference that charity events such as this have made to Bob and his family’s life over the last 10 years allowing Bob to meet his granddaughter BB, see Ross get married, see Joe… not get married.. yet ;) and live life in great spirits as he so deserves to.
Let’s do it for UltraBob, but also for Bob’s wife and rock Linda, Bob’s wonderful family and all the other Ultra men, women and families out there who are fighting the battle against Myeloma.
