Story

A few years ago, we started a blog which generated some weekly interest in our old men's football team. Willie, an avid follower of news and sport, had spotted an article in the Daily Telegraph (not the Belfast one) written by James Brown (not the soul singer), the journalist who founded the magazine 4-4-2. He shared it with us and it motivated me to start writing about our weekly outings to play football. The article itself described the sadness experienced by a group of old men 5-a-side players, when one of their number passed away. How ironic it is that we are now experiencing similar grief when the man we called "Wullie" eventually lost his battle with cancer after a long, gallant struggle. It was a match he was never going to win but he never accepted that he would come second. He continued to turn out for up to four matches a week until a couple of months before the final whistle. He was an inspiration to us all, on and off the pitch and we owe him for being our Captain, team mate and friend.

To celebrate this legend, ourselves and the McIntaggart family have decided to revive the "Love Street Cup" and organise a charity football match. The match will take place at Ulidia Pitches, Ormeau Road, at 1pm on Sunday February 16th.The opposition will be Orangefield Legends and our goal is to raise money for the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast who cared for Willie in his final weeks. Having visited Willie at the hospice, I have the utmost admiration for the work that the staff and volunteers do there. They too are legends and Willie, Oonagh, Odhran and Naimh appreciate everything they did.

Post match, refreshment will be available at the Pavilion Public (Big) House next door to Ulidia. Entertainment and craic are guaranteed so we look forward to seeing a big crowd, if not for the football, for the apres match activities. If you can't be there, please leave a message on here and don't forget to dig deep to support the extraordinary work done by Marie Curie. We can't forget.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to read this and we hope to see you on 16th February.
