Story
I have been swimming casually for the last few years as a means of keeping fit in a way that is sympathetic on the old bones and rugby injuries. Recently, I have been swimming up to 3 times
a week for 1/2 mile (32 lengths) in each session.
I then saw an Alzheimer’s Society campaign called “Memory Mile Swim”,
which has prompted me to challenge myself for a cause that is very close to my
heart.
My Grandma (Nan) had dementia when I was young but I still vividly remember how it affected this Strong, Clever, Lovely
Independent Lady and all of her family, including my Mam. It is a heart-breaking
condition.
There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that's one every three minutes.
1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia.
Please can I ask you to donate by clicking the link below.
You can choose either a Lump Sum, a Value per Mile or even make it interesting by Challenging me to a particular number of Miles!
Note: if we raise over £100 I am awarded an Alzheimer’s Society Swim Cap, which will help tremendously with the daily frizz!!!
Finally, the Alzheimer’s Society for your Memory Mile swim is open to anyone at any level at any time during the year - it is a great way to
get fit for all ages and is in aid of a Fantastic cause. You can swim the mile all in one go or over weeks or months and can pick your favorite place to swim, your local pool, the sea, a lake, a river, the bath (well, maybe not in the bath!).
April 1st, the Day after Mother’s Day, is a fitting day to start the challenge i.e. in memory of the Strong Women that are sadly no longer with us but have all had a massive impact on me - Nan Taylor, Nan Smith and of course my Mam. X
P.S. If anyone wants to sign up and join me at some time during April that would be great!
Thank you so much for all your support.
Leigh 😊
