Story
Two Girls One Bike!
On the 1st September 2021 we will be setting off on our adventure for dementia -the Euro City Cycling challenge. This is a wheelie big challenge for the both of us, not only will we be cycling from Harwich to Brussels, covering 271 miles in 4 days, BUT we will be attempting this challenge on a Tandem…. yes a Tandem! Neither of us can remember the last time we got on a bike and it certainly wasn’t for a long as 4 days, so we are going to find this wheelie tyre-ing!
In true Aimee and Lizzie style, we will be dressed head to toe in orange kit, on our training rides and throughout the duration of our challenge too! We will also be accompanied by our #TeamARUK Tandem, which will also be completely orange, featuring spokies and handlebar ribbons to match. You won’t be able to miss us!
We are so determined to raise as much money and awareness as possible and we believe this event will help us do just that!
So, why Alzheimer’s Research UK…
As you may already know, we both work in the Sporting Events Team at ARUK. Every day we hear from our supporters about the devastating impact dementia has had on their families. We are continuously amazed by the truly incredible challenges our supporters undertake and their remarkable achievements. This has inspired us both to embark on our very own challenge for #TeamARUK to play our part in changing the lives of those affected by the heartbreak of dementia.
This is a HUGE challenge for us and it really will push us to our limits. Any support you can offer, whether that’s joining us on training rides, coming along to one of our fundraising events or making a donation, really will mean so much to us. We want to take on this challenge to help raise awareness and to find a way to prevent and cure the diseases that cause dementia, for future generations.
Sadly, Lizzie’s Grandad passed away on the 14th March 2020, after living with Lewy Body Dementia for 6 years. Having witnessed the devastating impact dementia can have on an individual and their loved ones, we decided we would like to raise as much as we can for Alzheimer’s Research UK, who are working tirelessly in order to develop a life-changing dementia treatment.
We want to do this for Lizzie’s Grandad Terry, dear family friend Barbara, Great Auntie Bridget and all the other families who have been affected by this cruel, degenerative illness.
How your support can make a massive difference...
Almost one million people are living with dementia in the UK and that number is rapidly rising. One in three babies born today will develop a form of dementia and there are currently no dementia survivors. But research can change this!
- £20 could fund one hour of vital research
- £50 could provide access to specialist equipment for studying cells
- £120 could support complex protein analysis
- £300 could pay for a genetic test to help identify risk genes
- £500 could pay for a brain scan to help scientists track dementia as it progresses
Together we can and we will make breakthroughs possible!
Thank you so much for your support!
