Story
In Pakistan over 33 million people have been affected by the deadly floods in what has been labelled as "the worst climate disaster in a decade" with almost 1300 people tragically losing their lives. A large majority of those numbers, expected to be children.
Consequently, many parts of Pakistan have become inaccessible as one third of the country is now under water, with reports of further rainfall still to come. This is over 103,000 square miles which is the equivalent to an area greater than the United Kingdom.
We often believed as well as many others, that we would not see the impacts of climate change within our lifetime. However the danger is very much real and is unfolding before our very eyes.
Pakistan has over 7000 glaciers, the most in the world outside of the polar regions, and is one of the top 10 countries most affected by global change, as per the Global Climate Risk Index. So the situation is only expected to get worse.
The devastation has resulted in many of the displaced victims now living in tents with no access to clean water or food supplies, with concerns of diseases causing more fatalities. There are over 650,000 pregnant women who have been displaced, of which 75,000 are due to give birth within the next month and are in need of urgent medical care.
As a result, we have decided to physically challenge ourselves by climbing Ben Nevis, this October. We will be looking to raise funds to support Islamic relief members on the ground providing vital humanitarian aid to the most needy.
