Story
Back in January, Phil Brown had just had his treatment for terminal cancer stopped. He was about to go and get a second opinion and would then try and get on a trial and really everything should have been about him, but a thing popped up on Facebook for Macmillan Mighty Hikes and we took a look at it and I suggested I would walk it for him in honour of the work Macmillan had done with his mum when she too had terminal cancer. I mentioned to a small group of people that we had had this conversation and within no time at all a group of friends had also signed up with me on Phil's behalf. Phil would have liked to have done it himself, having run marathons on every continent and completed all 6 marathon majors, but he knew it simply wasn't going to be possible. Phil only twice looked for sponsorship in the 18 marathons he ran and we know we have just raised a lot of money on his behalf for the small support group he relied on after his diagnosis, but he never got to raise any for Macmillan, to whom he and his sister, Carolyn, who is walking with us, were eternally grateful for their care and support of their mum, Pat, as her disease progressed. So, we are walking for Pat, with Phil's wishes in mind. We are going to be doing it slowly as events have overtaken us and Phil is no longer here to cheer us on from the sidelines, which means training hasn't been as consistent as we would have liked, so please, please consider dipping your hand in your pocket to support a charity that gives selflessly, with love, and is prepared to care for any one of us if we are unlucky enough to receive the diagnosis that everyone dreads. These slow walkers promise to be a bit more motivated for every penny that comes our way.
