Story
The Treasured Memories Appeal provides ongoing support to bereaved children and young people by providing memory boxes, which are put together by Queen's Hospital's Palliative Care Team and contain books which help children come to terms with losing a loved one, and items to keep the memory of their loved ones alive, for example, presents for special occasions such as their 21st birthday, wedding day, photos etc.
In May 2018, Treasured Memories donations enabled us to open 'Dennis's Den' - a designated space in Queens Hospital for us to be able to have difficult conversations such as breaking bad news and support children and young people to share their anxieties and feelings in a trusting and safe environment. The room was named after one of our patients who had a young family and died in 2013.
This year, the pandemic has brought new challenges for our patients and their families and we have been supporting them as best we can, given the restrictions, for example, by helping them to keep in touch with their loved ones on our wards through the use of iPads and laptops etc. Donations and support for Treasured Memories have never been more important than it is right now.
Our Christmas Tree Appeal enables relatives, staff and visitors to remember a loved one at this special time by leaving a message on our board and making a donation to Treasured Memories.
