About RNLI
We are taking on an English Channel relay in June 2022 to raise money for RNLI, whose volunteer lifeboat crews do vital work saving lives at sea.
Their humanitarian work in the English Channel to rescue vulnerable people attempting to cross the Channel in small boats was in particular focus in 2021, and they have been forced to defend themselves against xenophobic rhetoric from some politicians. As RNLI CEO Mark Dowie puts it; "when it comes to rescuing those people attempting to cross the Channel, we do not question why they got into trouble, who they are or where they come from. All we need to know is that they need our help."
RNLI lifeguards also keep watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands, and the RNLI safety teams and educators work tirelessly to educate and inform people on water safety.
We are hoping to raise £2,000 to help them keep up the important work they do.
About the team
We are a group of four amateur masters swimmers (Daniel Mills, Kal Jhugroo, Thomas Mills and Chris Knight) based at Trafford Metro BSC and Open Swim in Manchester. All of us competed at elite junior level and have carried on swimming through our 20s and 30s. Between us we hold British Junior and Masters swimming records, and have competed at international level in the pool and open water.
We are hoping to complete the 21 mile (33km) swim in around 8 hours, which would be a new 4-person relay World Record. For it to be recognised as official swim we need to complete it in only short swim trunks, goggles and non-thermal swim caps. The water temperature in early June is likely to be around 12-14 degrees - brrr!
We will be sharing our journey including training sessions and cold water swimming tips over the coming months!
Thanks for your support.
