Story
Drug and alcohol use is widespread and does not discriminate so none of us are immune to finding ourselves using or relying on alcohol or substances, especially during challenging times.
I work with young people who use substances or are impacted by a significant persons use and I am astounded everyday by the strength and resilience shown by them and their families. It is truly a privilege to share a part of their lives and sit with them while they explore themselves, their lives and the effect of this.
Nobody chooses to be an addict and people use alcohol and drugs for many different reasons with a very high rate of those engaged in recovery services having a significant history of trauma. We are still seeing a really high level of stigma around this topic and this is felt everyday by the individuals and families living with this. Stigma creates and reinforces the shame and guilt already experienced by these people and often makes it incredibly difficult for those affected by this to engage with support from statutory or third sector services which are often the key to helping someone find a way forward to a more positive, healthier and safer future.
Drug and alcohol use affects more than just the person that is using and the ripple effects can be seen for a lifetime. Help us to make these people's lives even a little better and maybe take a minute to think about your own thoughts and beliefs around this topic. Helping one person in this way can have a positive impact on a whole community and we can all play a part in this just by being more aware and showing compassion towards others.
