Story

Lollys story..
At the end of 2019 I started experiencing excruciating pain in my thigh that woke me up each night. Because of a previous back injury my GP and a pain specialist I saw all thought it was back related. Until April last year when I found a lump in my thigh. My GP refused to see me because of Covid-19 and at the end of May 2020 I begged him to see me as the lump wasn’t going down and the pain at night was resulting in me having a little more than 3 hours sleep.
Thankfully my GP referred me for an ultrasound which then lead to an x-ray, MRI and eventually a biopsy at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. All of which showed a tumour in my femur.
On 18th June I was diagnosed with low grade Parosteal Osteosarcoma. Also known as primary bone cancer.
I then underwent surgery to remove 22cm of my thigh bone and replaced with titanium.
Luckily this surgery meant with 100% clear margins the cancer was gone and I was cancer free.
Until February 2021 when a regular chest CT showed some of my lung nodules had grown and extra flecks had appeared across both lungs.
A lung biopsy confirmed the cancer was back and had traveled to my lungs.
Because it is still (thankfully) Parosteal osteosarcoma in my lungs it means it is again low grade and slow growing. So now we watch and wait and have chest CT’s every 3 months to see what the nodules/flecks are doing. If they grow/become aggressive then it’s either surgery or ablation to treat.
Unfortunately for me I’m in the rare 15% that parosteal osteosarcoma travels to the lungs and because of this, we’ve just no idea as to how it will pan out. So little is known about sarcoma - compared to all the other “regular” cancers.

Sarcoma accounts for 1% of all cancers - it’s so rare.
Bone sarcoma is even rarer than soft tissue!!

See images in gallery for the tumour and the titanium metal work.
