Adidas Women's 5k Challenge · 11 September 2011 ·

Refuge opened the world’s first refuge in West London in 1971. We support thousands of women & children every day, experiencing domestic and sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, stalking, trafficking, prostitution & so-called ‘honour’ based violence.

Story

Four decades ago Refuge opened the world's first safe house for women and children experiencing domestic violence.  Our services now support over 1,600 women and children on any given day.  To mark our landmark 40th birthday, I will be competing in the Adidas Women's 5k Challenge on Sunday, 11th September, 2011 - along with other members of Refuge staff.

Two women are killed every week in England and Wales by a current or former partner.  Ten women kill themselves each week in order to escape abuse.  In 90% of family households where domestic violence occurs, children are in the same or next room - 50% of these children are directly abused.

Please sponsor me generously so that Refuge can continue to give a voice to the thousands of women and children experiencing domestic violence
