Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 6th of October 2021, life as we knew it was turned completely upside down. As I sat opposite my consultant and I heard her say the words ‘I’m really sorry Tracey, you have breast cancer’ my world screeched to an abrupt halt. I wasn’t able to take anything else in that she said after that, all I kept hearing was ‘Tracey, you have breast cancer’ everything else was muffled and a blur.
Lex and I were scooped up and supported by my breast cancer nurse who was allocated to me immediately after I’d got the news. She was kind and gentle and knew that any more information that day was never going to be remembered by us. We were overwhelmed. She gave us some booklets to take away with us to read once we had had a moment to let it all sink in. We needed that moment!
The booklets were all from the Breast Cancer Now charity and when I was ready to open them up and accept what was happening to me, they were everything I needed. They helped me understand what my diagnosis meant and what my treatment plan was going to look and feel like. I spent hours reading them over and over again. They were so informative and answered almost all the questions that kept popping up for me (usually at 3am!). Lex, my parents and our family also found them really useful, especially with how they could support me through what was to come.
Not only do Breast Cancer Now produce these amazing world class resources, they are also there to support patients and their families throughout the journey. They have a 24hr helpline which I used when I needed to talk though any worries or concerns I was having or to get advice about side effects from treatment I was experiencing. I felt listened to and like I had another layer of support wrapped around me alongside my my incredible oncology team. On the dark days (they happen!) Breast Cancer Now were right there, for that I will always be incredibly grateful.
That is why when I saw they had charity places for the London Landmarks Half 2023, I knew it was time to make a deal with my body - It owes me one 😊!
I still visit the oncology unit every 3 weeks for treatment and will do until the end of Feb 2023. My body has endured a lot over the last 10 months, I hardly recognise it. Some days I’m really angry at it for letting me down in the first place, but mostly I am so flipping proud of it for carrying me through this and for fighting so hard for me. We are winning- one day at a time.
So, alongside my husband Lex, my son Jordan and my cousin Ally, I am going to build up my strength over the coming months (Winter - urgh!! 🥶❄️) and whilst as of today I can’t do 1km, on the 2nd of April 2023 we WILL do 21km together in support of all those affected by breast cancer and the wonderful charities that hold our hands at our most vulnerable.
I understand that times are tough financially for everyone, but please know every little penny helps, there is no donation too small. If you are able to donate to this or to any cancer charity out there, please know you are making a huge difference and I am so grateful ❤️.
Thank you
