Story

I am running in the Chester Marathon on Sunday 9 October.

Why do I want to run 26.2 miles you ask? Is it mid-life crisis as I turned 50 this year? Partly yes, but there is a more serious reason behind it.

The decision to do a marathon was triggered by a sad event.

In June 2010 Carolyn, my husband’s sister, died of ovarian cancer at the too early age of 58. Also my sister Louise, who I love dearly, was diagnosed 2 years ago with breast cancer, but happily for my Mum and I, she survived and is enjoying life as a happy retiree.

Both sisters had the very best of care at renowned specialist centres. It shows that hope is very much there but also that some types of cancer still have very low survival rates due to the lack of knowledge of early diagnosis and best treatment. Research is helping people beat cancer but there is still a lot to learn. Many of my friends have close relatives who have had cancer which has had a major impact on their lives.

I wanted to contribute to AICR (the Association of International Cancer Research) to help support their projects.

AICR conduct basic research into the underlying biochemical factors that trigger cancer and which can be applied to multiple cancer types. AICR also support projects into specific types of cancer and direct their funds to groups world-wide who are concentrating on avenues of medical research which show particular promise for the future. As a former research Biochemist myself, I can appreciate the amount of time and effort required to make even tiny breakthroughs.

Last weekend I did my last long training run of 20 miles and have convinced myself that I can complete 26.2 miles. However it was hard work and I will definitely need a wee bit of motivation for the last few miles to overcome the tiredness and pain. The thought of raising money for a good cause will keep me going to cross the finish line at Chester Racecourse with a great big smile to celebrate my achievement.

Thank you for your support.
