Story
Nigel was diagnosed with myelofibrosis in March 2020 and was given a stem cell transplant in November 2020 following a match with his sister Deb. He was looked after by a brilliant team so we have chosen this charity to show our appreciation to all the staff at the Queen Elizabeth hospital who treated Nigel for their support and for making the past 18 months bearable, you all put hope in all our hearts. A special mention goes out to Consultants Dr Francesca Kinsella, Professor Charles Craddock and the lovely Bone Marrow transplant Team Leader Niomi Dean who all do an amazing job. The Cure Leukaemia charity helped fund the expansion of the Centre for Clinical Haematology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where Nigel received much of his treatment. Previously the CCH was just a clinic, and the day unit and ECP clinic were based on the 6th floor in the main hospital. Bringing all these services into one centre meant better treatment and facilities for all blood cancer patients like Nigel.
In January 2020, blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia began funding the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) network which comprises 12 specialist research nurses at blood cancer centres across the UK and a facilitatory Hub based at the Centre for Clinical Haematology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. This network allows pioneering clinical trials of blood cancer to run at our centre ensuring we can give our patients the best possible options for their form of blood cancer. Without Cure Leukaemia's funding, these trials would not run and patients would miss out on these treatments. That is why we are raising funds for this charity by supporting the We Will campaign. With more support for Cure Leukaemia, we will fund more nurses in more cities in the UK, we will run more clinical trials, we will give more blood cancer patients hope, we will find a cure. Help Cure Leukaemia fund more specialist research nurses.
