Story
In response to the crisis in Ukraine, the pupils and staff of Towerbank Primary School wish to fundraise for all people in the region affected by the conflict. The primary 7s and the School House Captains suggested, and are now helping to organise, the following fundraising walks.
Over the next few weeks and over a number of days the:
Primary 6s and 7s will collectively walk 1800km which is the distance from Towerbank’s front door to Ukraine.
Primary 4s and 5s will collectively walk the distance from Kyiv to Poland which is around 450km.
Primary 1s - 3s will collectively walk around 200km from Kyiv to a city south of Kyiv called Smila (the pupils thought it sounded nice).
The walks will take place along Portobello Prom for the older pupils and around the playground for the younger year groups.
The distances may sound ambitious, but the pupils said they wanted to attempt something really challenging. They wanted any children in Ukraine that might hear of the Towerbank fundraising efforts to know how much children in Scotland care.
We chose the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) because it is a coalition of 15 UK aid charities with lots of experience raising funds to respond quickly and effectively to overseas disasters. We also like that it works not only in Ukraine but in many other countries that have suffered from war including Afghanistan, South Sudan, Syria, Myanmar and Yemen.
