Story

THE RIDE

This July, four intrepid (and slightly crazy) 'cyclists' will embark on our greatest adventure so far... we will be cycling from le Eiffel Tower all the way back to Grimsby Dock Tower over a six day period covering almost 470 miles, in aid of the St Andrew's Hospice and the Macmillan Cancer Suite. We have all decided to complete this ride as in our young lives we have all had people very close to us affected by cancer. We chose these two charities as they do so much good work and deserve as much help as they can get.

THE CHARITIES

St Andrew’s Hospice is a community facility, registered charity, funded primarily by private donations. It costs over £2 million every year to continue this service. The Hospice cares for people of all ages who have a progressive life limiting illness and require palliative care. All services and facilities are provided free of charge to patients and their families. St Andrew’s is available to anyone who needs specialist Hospice care.

The Macmillan Suite and Ward A1 is a designated Oncology and Haematology Department within the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust. The Macmillan Suite is used for the administration of adult out-patient chemotherapy and other supportive treatments related to Cancer Care; whilst Ward A1 provides adult inpatient care for the same range of services.

THE RIDERS

Gavin Jobling - I am completing this ride in memory of my wife Eleanor, who passed away on the 20th of October 2007 aged 23 after fighting ovarian cancer so bravely for well over a year. She recieved help from both of the organisations as do many more in our local area, so I would like to give them something back.

Simon Maddison - Although I have been lucky enough not to be directly affected by cancer, I have a number of friends and non-immediate family who have both won and lost the battle with this disease. I am completing the Two Towers Challenge not only for those people but also for the many others who suffer.

Mark Jennings - This is a massive challenge for us, not just the 460+ miles but also the fundraising itself. I am doing the Two Tower Challenge to raise awareness and for my father who is a prostate cancer survivor thanks to the treatment received in the local area.

Gaz Bickerdike - I’ve had an interest in cycling for as long as I can remember and like many I’d count Lance Armstrong as a hero. I hope to complete the Two Towers Challenge in memory of my Grandfather who died of prostate cancer and my Mother who is a breast cancer survivor.
