..........on Tuesday 9thMarch 2020 we received the devastating news that actually Pete was much worse than anyone knew. He had been diagnosed with a very rare blood cancer in 2011, treatment was failing, had failed in fact and we were to prepare for the worst. He had fought this in his own way, with absolute privacy and discretion, a sense of humour, and bravery. His wish was no fuss and that nobody was to worry about him, he managed the pain and the fear on his own, supported by the wonderful nurses in the Haematology Unit at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. The next day we lost our beloved Pete. He passed away with his Mum and Dad at his side on Wednesday 10th March 2021........Pete’s wishes were that he be laid to rest in Cupar and remembered fondly in Italy. An Italian family is nothing if not passionate, loyal and loving. So, one of Pete’s brothers, Mike, came up with a ‘mad’ idea and now he, brother David and brother-in-law Graham are cycling in his memory between the family’s ‘2 hometowns’ of Cupar and Buzzo in Italy, where we will find a location for a memorial to be placed in Pete’s memory. They will be leaving Cupar on 25th June 2022 and, in spirit, take Pete on his very own final ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ supported on the journey by his brother, sister, sister-in-law and nieces (it’s a big family!).
When they reach Buzzo they will be joined by the rest of the family, to remember this very special person, in the place he wanted to be remembered. On the way they plan to raise as much money as they can for the Blood Cancer UK who, as well as funding research into Blood Cancer, support families affected by this dreadful disease.
Upon his passing Pete’s friends immediately began to raise funds in his memory. They have so far raised £4000, which the family are donating to the lovely team in the Haematology Unit at Ninewells Hospital. Our hope as a family is to match this with a similar amount for Blood Cancer UK.
