Story
After my grandfather Roy passed away from Dementia in 2016 I’ve always been keen to do something to give back to the research for Alzheimer’s in the UK.
Amongst many different ideas, one which always appealed to me was the thought of a long cycle ride. I bought a bike to exercise which lead to this idea being cemented after I realised I enjoyed cycling and exploring the roads of Surrey!
So, the decision was made to ride from Soho Square in London, where Roy used to work as an Architect, to The Loop Bar Tignes in the French Alps. Tignes is a special place for me, where I completed a six month ski season and met the girl who would eventually become my wife! The Loop is a bar that I (and James!) have spent a lot of good times - and enjoyed many pints of beer!
In comes James - who (maybe helped by the wine consumed?) was immediately ‘all-in’ to accompany me on the journey that will take us over 1,000km (600+ miles), and up to an altitude of 2,100m. A school friend who I have known for 20 years, James is the perfect teammate for such a daunting challenge. James, with great Grandparents and other family affected by Alzheimer's, is also close to the cause - so this means a huge amount to both of us.
We plan on training together for the Tour and leaning on each other for support throughout.
The Tour de Tignes will take place from Saturday the 7th of August to Saturday the 14th of August 2021. We will be camping each night along the way and plan to keep everyone updated with our progress as we go from the capital, across the channel and down through France to The Alps! Look out for blogs, photos and videos throughout as we document our adventure!
We hope that you are able to give generously, thank you!
We are self-funding the trip so that all donations go directly to Alzheimer’s Research UK.
About Alzheimer's Research UK:
Without effective treatments, one in three people born today will die with dementia. Today, there are no dementia survivors but research can change this.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK's leading dementia research charity, dedicated to causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. Backed by our passionate scientists and supporters, we’re challenging the way people think about dementia, uniting the big thinkers in the field and funding the innovative science that will deliver a cure.
