Story

We are two Submariners in the Royal Navy with possibly too much time on our hands in 2022 and a thirst to see how far we can push ourselves.

2020 was a challenging year for most and we unfortunately lost a very respected college, Capt James Simpson, who sadly took his own life due the effects of mental illness. Since then, a charity has been set up in his honour as a separate fund under the RNRMC charity umbrella. HELP - Jim’s Story has been created with the aim to educate, raise awareness and to give people a deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that affect wellbeing. It will also provide people with the practical skills and knowledge needed to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues and give people the confidence to step in and support where it’s needed.

By cycling the 2020 Tour de France in the same timeframe as the pro's (23 days, including 2 rest days), Darren and Adam, with a support crew of Mark and Iain, intend to raise funds and awareness for mental health, in conjunction with HELP- Jim's Story and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. All money raised goes to this great and important charity.

About the charity

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity is the principle charity of the Royal Navy. Beneficiaries lie at the heart of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity's purpose, it is our duty to remain focused on their needs. Since 2007, we have funded projects and facilities that boost morale for those who serve today. We also distribute millions of pounds annually to military charities which care for the children, families and veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
