My name is Matthew Clark and I am a 20 year old student studying Business at Cardiff University. I had to take a gap year from my studies when I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) last September. I went through 28 weeks chemotherapy and limb sparing surgery, which has left me physically disabled. However I am still alive and as a way to thank those who have helped me I am planning to cycle with a small team from Lands end to John o Groats. The original plan was Carbonne in the South of France back to my home town Monmouth (South Wales). The journey is just under 1000 miles and I am hoping it will take no more than 15 days to complete (which is the same for the new challenge). This challenge will undoubtedly place an enormous amount of strain on my body, as cycling any distance actively using one leg is a challenge to physically fit people. This challenge will need the help and support of many people to ensure I last the distance, but it’s my opportunity to give something back to those who have so skilfully cared for me during my illness.
To say thank you to all those that have helped me through treatment, I have decided to raise money for two charities close to my heart. CLIC Sargent is a charity that helps children and young adults come to terms with cancer. As the children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is there… with clinical, practical and emotional support, every step of the way. While the Teenage Cancer Trust administer the treatment to young persons aged 13-24. The Teenage Cancer Trust provide excellent facilities that realise that young people have different needs to adults, and so aim to provide a homely feel to each of there units. Oncoloigsts say that there is a 15% greater chance of recovery when the age group 13-24 are treated in age specific specialist facilities with staff who understand their psychological and emotional needs when a diagnosis of cancer hits them traumatically. I will be raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust Wales.
Thank you for taking time to visit my Just Giving page and I will be updating it as often as I can.
