Story
I’m running the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 14th April 2019 to raise awareness and money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
My Babica (Polish Nan) and Grandma (Irish Nan) both died having been affected by dementia. I’ve seen how this condition has deteriorated their health and memories leaving them lost and confused, to the point where they don’t always recognise who their loved ones are or knowing where they are.
My Grandad currently has a form of dementia. He often forgets things or when he’s tired doesn’t recognise me, but he remembers when we both used to watch the start of the London Marathon together before going to Church. I told him he might get to see me on the TV for the Brighton Marathon, which made him smile.
With someone developing dementia every three minutes, dementia is set to be the UK’s biggest killer, affecting all our futures. It doesn’t discriminate, it devastates lives, and right now there’s no cure.
Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. They provide information and support, fund research and are creating a more dementia-friendly society so people with the condition can live without fear and prejudice.
