Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 2013 · 4 August 2013 ·

Motivated by the strength and unfaltering sense of humour of our youngest daughter Poppy, we as a family are committed to support The Lily Foundation and help find a cure for Mitochondrial Disease.

Story

The sole reason I signed up for the inaugural Prudential Ride London Surrey 100 miler in August was that, like many others, I simply enjoy cycling. I have never completed 100 miles straight off and inspired by the Olympics road race last year, which ran near where I live, as does the Prudential ride, I loved the idea of this challenge. Then James called.

I started Uni with James, we shared a flat together, we stayed in contact, he became godfather to my son and James now has two beautiful daughters whom my boys love to spend time with.

James called as he had decided that as his wife was running the Newcastle half marathon, he would buy a bike and cycle there from London to see her complete it, whilst raising money in support of their chosen charity, The Lily Foundation. He then asked me if I would join him. I said yes (as did a few others), and then asked how far it was. 322 miles do be exact, give or take 50 (but mosly give) depending on the route.

Electing to raise money from both cycling challenges for the Lily Foundation was then a clear decision. So why the Lily Foundation?

In October 2012, James's youngest daughter was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease.

Mitochondrial Disease is a highly complicated disorder that impacts each and every person differently. The best description given is that Mitochondria are the body's batteries; if these batteries are running low or don’t charge properly then normal biological development processes will be impacted. Mitochondrial Disease can impact almost any part of the body from the muscles to the brain. Little is really known about this disease. There are no treatments. There is no cure.

For James' daughter, Poppy, this means an inability to balance and walk unaided and a lack of energy to do the normal of things that a 2 year old usually does. Given how little is know about Mitochondrial Disease, this also means that James and his wife don't really know what the outlook is for Poppy. At present, their focus is to increase her mobility and communication to ensure that she has the opportunity to develop and progress to the maximum of her ability.

Your donations will go directly to the Lily Foundation. The Lily Foundation is committed to finding a cure for Mitochondrial Disease. The foundation has a three point mission 1) fund research to improve diagnosis and treatment options 2) raise awareness of these conditions so they are more easily recognised 3) support families facing the impact and challenges of this disease. Have a look at this video: http://vimeo.com/62446736

I hope you can help me raise funds for this brilliant charity and in doing so, support those facing this disease, including children like Poppy, one of my best friends' daughters.

Many thanks

Tom
