On July 20th, Tom, Robert, Steve, David, Greg, Michael, Paul and Nick (plus 9,000 other mad amateurs) will be riding the penultimate stage of this year's Tour de France from Montelimar to Mont Ventoux, a distance of 172km, including 4 mountain climbs , finishing with the legendary 22km climb of Mont Ventoux.
Why?
In May 2006, Tom's best friend, Daryl Hughes, was diagnosed with stomach cancer. A keen cyclist, he was determined that one day, once the chemo had worked, the two of them would ride the Etape together. Regrettably, that day never came and Daryl passed away in November the same year, leaving behind his pregnant wife and 15 month old son. He was 41.
Consequently we are taking on this challenge in his memory.
During his 6 months of treatment, Daryl received regular visits from Macmillan nurses who did their best to ease his suffering and comfort his family. Your donations to this excellent cause are gratefully received.
