Story
Our father, Tom Graveney OBE, aged 88, passed away in November 2015. He was a leading English cricketer of the post-war years and played for England in 79 Test matches. His career spanned from 1948 to 1972, scoring 47,793 runs at an average of 44.91. Along the way he scored 122 centuries.. The Times described him as "one of the finest English batsmen of the 1950s and 1960s, and arguably the most elegant of them all".
His playing days began with Gloucestershire before he moved to Worcestershire, and enjoyed an Indian summer in his career. When his playing days ended he coached Queensland briefly, and became an expert summarizer for BBC TV. Famous for his elegant cover drive, he was often described as"the stuff of legend." Tom was one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year in 1953.
In later life, our father Tom suffered from Parkinson’s Disease which affected his movement and thought processes but, throughout, he remained his cheerful, humble, and affable self.
Our family have chosen Parkinson’s UK as the charity to which donations in Tom’s memory might be made, to make sure everyone receives the very best care and support, as he did. We would appreciate you sharing any favourite memories of Tom in your messages.
