Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In January I will be leaving my job to volunteer for Raleigh International in Tanzania. I’ll be working as a project manager to help community building, such as providing clean drinking water and sanitation to remote communities, and environmental protection.

Please note: all donations raised go directly to Raleigh International and do NOT go towards my flights, equipment, vaccinations etc.

Raleigh International is a youth and sustainable development charity, providing expeditions and volunteer projects abroad. Raleigh's mission is to inspire, challenge and develop people to learn how to build sustainable communities and conserve the environment.

Their three charitable objectives are:

1. advancement of education and global citizenship

2. relief of those in need by reason of disadvantage

3. advancement of environmental protection and sustainable community development

This January will be the first time Raleigh International has operated in Tanzania, meaning there is lots of work to do! Raleigh, with support from and in cooperation with the Tanzanian government, will be working on a diverse range of projects across the whole of the country. They’ll be working in many of the country's protected areas, such as Tanzania's national parks and conservation concessions to improve environmental sustainability. Their community projects focus on the crucial needs of rural communities, namely access to water, education and adequate sanitation, whilst also implementing initiatives driven by sustainable technology and alternative energy.

Tanzania is considered one of the poorest countries in the world based on its United National Human Development Index, with many of its people living below the World Bank poverty line.

Only 54% of the population have access to improved water supplies and only 24% have access to adequate sanitation*. (*Source Unicef)
