Story
We are thrilled to share with you our upcoming endeavour of
running the Oxford half marathon (Toby’s first!!), but this event is not solely about personal achievement; it holds a much deeper purpose. We have decided to lace up our running shoes and take on this challenge to raise funds and awareness for the incredible organisation that is close to both our hearts - known as Oxfordshire Mind.
It goes without saying that mental well-being is as important as physical health, and yet it often receives less attention and support. Oxfordshire Mind, a renowned mental health charity, tirelessly works to provide vital services and support to individuals facing mental health challenges. More recently, Mind charity have been working incredibly hard in reviewing the Draft Mental Health Bill. The reform has been a long time coming, with the original Act being created 40 years ago! We were particularly pleased to see measures in the draft bill that would give people receiving care under the Act more say over how they are treated and allow a nominated person to exercise certain rights on their behalf…but we need to see more.
The decision to embark on this journey was not taken lightly and is a result of our own personal experiences and witnessing the impact of mental health issues on the lives of loved ones and friends. We have both seen the struggles, the battles fought in silence, and the courage it takes to seek help or to even admit that one is not ‘okay’. Mind's dedication to improving mental health outcomes resonates deeply with us, and we are both determined to contribute to their cause.
By participating in this half marathon, we hope to accomplish two crucial objectives. Firstly, through our training, commitment and by motivating each other, we aim to inspire others to prioritise their mental health and well-being. We want to emphasise that we all have struggles and it is okay to seek support and reach out. Secondly, we hope to raise vital funds to support Mind's efforts in providing counselling, research, and education.
Training during the summertime throughout multiple heatwaves is providing to be TOUGH - especially as it is Toby’s first half marathon - so any motivation, including joining us for run along the Thames would be widely welcomed!! Your support, whether through donations, kind words, or sharing our story, will have a significant impact.
Let us run towards better mental health, hand in hand with Oxfordshire Mind. <3
