Story
CYCLE AMERICA: SAN FRANCISCO TO BAR HARBOR (MAINE).
- 15 States
- 5 Time Zones
- Only Way Forward is to Pedal!
Introduction
I feel that this is important that you understand why I am conducting this cycle ride; the British Limbless Ex Service Men's Assoiation (BLESMA) is the main charity that supports members of the Armed Forces which have sustained injuries whilst serving. BLESMA support the injured whilst they are still serving and also once the have left the Armed Forces. BLESMA is the primary source of support for members of the Armed Forces who then have to leave the services due to the extent of their injuries.
What most people don't realise is that Help For Heroes helps greatly whilst the soldier is sterving however doesn't assist soldiers once they have left the Armed Forces.
The Trip
The route begins in San Francisco trailing straight through the arduous heart of America, ultimately concluding in Bar Harbor, state of Maine. As viewed from the map above, this by no means will be 'a walk in the park'. Having to contend with not only the harsh intolerable heat, the sheer height of the mountains, but consequently the extensive amount of necessities and luggage that will need to be carried, it will be 'tuff'.
The route extends 4200 miles which I have estimated will take approximately 50 to 60 days. I plan to depart from San Francisco in June heading East inland towards some of the hottest states in America. The route follows over the spine of the Rocky Mountains and into some of the lonliest roads in America across Nevada, Utah and Colorado. Finally I shall be hitting some of the 'flatter' roads known as the Plains. Not until Missouri will I begin heading north into the Great Lakes where the scenery will change almostly drastically. Boardering a joyful cycle of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario; from here is the home stretch of the last few hundred miles of reaching the finish line in Bar Harbor.
In terms of luggage, there is going to be more than enough to carry. Once you have added up all the necessities (7L of water, tent, food, bike spares and clothes etc.) this leaves little room for any privileges such as a extra clothes or books. In total all the panias shall be holding at least 30kg which equates to nearly half a person! During the ride, I shall take time to update a blog for everyone to see photos, videos and written accounts on a weekly basis. For now I will create a website concerning much more detail concerning my route, planning and the charity to give everyone a bigger insight to my endeavor.
It will not be easy, so I intend to strive for as mauch publicity as possible to justify its worth. If anyone is able to sponsor even a small amount (which I know is very difficult in this current climate) I would very much appreciate it.
