Story

Well, well, well...here's we are again. It's been a few trips around the sun since I last found myself with the Adventurists; a lot has changed - both personally, and globally (thanks for that, pandemic). After nearly four years since driving across India in tuk-tuk, I'm more than ready for another foreign adventure into the unknown. This time however, three wheels seems like too much; for Morocco, I think a 2-wheel motorcycle is a perfect way to tour the country. The Monkey Run Morocco awaits.

Now typically, my two-wheeled vehicle of choice is a bicycle. But this is a special occasion, so I think I deserve an engine. Nothing too extravagant...50cc should be sufficient. Anything bigger than that, and it would be a cakewalk to go across the country.

For India, the prep work was basically non-existent. So this time, I've done my research, and I'm fully prepared. For those that are worried, I've provided an FAQ for what I'm doing in northwest Africa.

What is the Monkey Run Morocco?

It's a ride on a tiny 50cc motorcycle from Merzouga to Marrakech. Check it out here!!! https://www.theadventurists.com/guides/monkey-run-morocco/

What's the route?

Great question! Merzouga is in the pretty much central-easy part of the country, on the edge of the Sahara, and Marrakech is roughly straight west. So I suppose the route is "whatever roads go east-to-west over the Atlas Mountains."

Is there a guide?

I'll have a compass. And I have a printed copy of the National Geographic road atlas. That counts as a guide, right?

Are you riding solo?

IDK, maybe. I'll have a long bus ride to Merzouga with the 60 other idiots that are going on this trip. If I can make a friend on the way, hopefully I won't have to be on my own.

How fast does the motorcycle go?

It probably wouldn't be able to win the Tour de France, but it'll be fast enough.

What happens if you break down?

I figure out how to become a motorcycle mechanic and try to fix my bike.

Do you even know how to drive one of these bikes?

How hard can it be? I spend plenty of time on the saddle of a bicycle, and I rode a dirt bike once over the summer. So I image this will be somewhere in-between the two of those.

Why is that a picture of a rickshaw and not a motorcycle?

That was from my last journey with the Adventurists on the Rickshaw Run.  I haven't met my monkey bike yet, so that's the next best thing.

So there you have it, you know have as much knowledge about the trip as I do. It feels good to finally feed that travel bug. This is long overdue. The Rickshaw Run across India inspired me to write a book. I look forward to what'll come from this journey...

Now I hate being somebody to solicit donations, but as part of this adventure, I am raising money for Cool Earth. My happy place is out in the wilderness, amongst nature. The money raised for Cool Earth goes to protecting tropical rainforests; in my eyes, any donation towards preserving nature is a worthy investment. If you can find any amount to contribute, I am truly grateful for your donation. If not, I completely understand - either way, I hope you will continue to follow my misfortunes as I attempt to traverse a foreign country on a strange vehicle.

Cheers!

Travis
