As many of you know we lost our beautiful mum 6 years ago to a long hard battle with the Big 'C'.
Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the supporting or connective tissues of the body such as muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, blood vessels and fat.
There are around 3800 new cases of sarcoma diagnosed each year in the UK.
Most sarcomas (about 55%) affect the limbs, most frequently the leg. About 15% affect the head and neck area or are found externally on the trunk, while the remainder will be found internally in the retroperitoneum (abdominal area). This is where Mum's originated.
There are around 100 different sub-types of sarcoma.
Sarcoma is regarded as an 'orphan' cancer, which means that it has few relationships with other more common cancers.
It is also a rare disease and thus active research into new treatments is not always seen as a priority by many in the scientific or pharmaceutical world. Which is why it is even more important for it to receive Share of Voice versus other more common and curable cancers.
However, new treatments are entering clinical trials and there is the hope that the range available to doctors will grow in future years.
