NCDS provide valuable expert support on childhood deafness, raise awareness and campaign for deaf children’s rights, so that they can have the same opportunities as everyone else. Deaf children face unique challenges on their journey to independence. They can do anything that other children can do, they just need the right support.

This charity is personally important to me, and our family, as our incredible daughter Evie has bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. This means that she has hearing loss in both ears. Evie is a proud wearer of funky hearing aids and uses a radio aid in school to help her to hear what the teachers are saying.

It has been quite a journey so far, with Evie suffering with ear pain from birth. She has had major ear surgery, including cholesteatoma removal, inner ear bone reconstruction from her cartilage and a new ear drum via skin graft. For those who know Evie, she is a very brave, determined and feisty young lady, with a wicked sense of humour! 

In 2019, I thought it would be a good idea to apply for a place in the London marathon (having never run a marathon before). I was quite horrified when I actually won a place in the ballot! I cracked on and did the training, it wasn’t easy but I stuck at it as the end was in sight, only for everyone’s favourite friend COVID to put a stop to the 2020 marathon. 

23rd April 2023 is the deferred date for my marathon. The last 12 months  have thrown us a bit of a curve ball and I’m not as well-trained or fit as I would like to be. However, through a mixture of total fear, anticipation and excitement I will absolutely be giving this my best shot. It won’t be fast or pretty but with support of my family and fabulous friends, I am totally determined to cross that finish line and to raise some money for this awesome charity at the same time.
