On Sunday 18th September I shall attempt to complete the 13.1 miles of the Great North Run.

I have chosen to run for the Holistic Cancer Care Centre at James Cook Hospital, which is a charity very close to my heart for many reasons.

As many of you know, I am a Reiki Therapist and a couple of good friends of mine work at the centre, and I know what a truly wonderful place it is.

On the 1st July 2003 the purpose built Holistic Cancer Care Centre opened its doors to patients providing a quiet, peaceful place for patients to meet with others to relax.

The Holistic Cancer Care centre provides complimentary health care including Reiki, Aromatherapy, Acapuncture & Reflexology to help patients through their chemotherapy/ radiotherapy/ hormonal treatments and beyond. The centre also helps the patients and carers deal with the psychological problems associated with cancer and its treatments.

An average of 150 treatments are given each week and the provision of complementary therapies working alongside conventional medicine has achieved considerable success.

In order for the Holistic Cancer Care Centre to provide the current service, it needs to raise £200,000 a year. Whilst recognising the positive outcome of complimentary therapies, it continues to be funded by voluntary donations from the public.
