In July 2017 we found out that Russ had Sarcoma, a rare, very rare, form of cancer. It was a complete shock. None of us had heard of Sarcoma, none of us knew what the future held.
What we did know was what an amazing lust for life Russ had, his and Debs travels, their adventures. We also knew what a superb sense of humour he had, mischievous at all times. And with Debs, Callum & Charlotte, we all knew the love he had for his family. What we did not know, or had appreciated, until he became ill, was just how tough Russ was.
He knew what his diagnosis was, but he showed a determination and strength which I had never witnessed before to fight it. His courage to never give in and hold it together, making sure his humour helped those of us around cope, was remarkable.
Even when he knew he wouldn't recover, his spirit couldn't be crushed. With an extraordinary bravery he faced what was happening day after day. The strength he showed is one of the most inspiring things I will ever witness.
A year after sharing his diagnosis with us, Russ passed away. Sarcoma may have taken his life but it could not take his bravery, his humour or our memory of him.
In memory of Russ, I want to try and help Sarcoma UK find better treatments. Ensure people get the care they need, help fund expert information and support anyone who is suffering and their families. So I am running the London Marathon next year, in his memory and in his honour.
One of the last things Russ said to me was, don't be shit, have fun and reach out for anything you think you can achieve. So with that in mind, there is a twist, I am not just running it but I will be trying to break a Guinness World Record into the bargain by running the fastest marathon in a full sized cartoon cat outfit. Garfield will be running the streets of London in 2023
I am not to proud to beg, so please please please donate whatever you can, there is no amount too small, it will all help. I will also be running a charity auction so if you have anything worth donating, or know anyone who could donate, please let me know. Please spread the word and feel free to share this page, I will be sharing my progress via my Twitter page (@TimJones15) Instagram (timjones15) and Facebook pages.
And when the going gets tough, I will just think of Russ, see that cheeky face, and reach out for that inspiration he left me with.
Many thanks for taking the time to visit my page, I really appreciate it.
For you Russ. xxx
