Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
It is now 2 years since the transplant and we have decided to do the Tour o the Borders bike ride again this year, on 5 September, to celebrate our health and good fortune. The Tour o the Borders holds a special place for us, being the ride that we both had in our sights as a recovery challenge 6 months after Tim donated a kidney to Joseph in 2019. The 20% gradient of the mighty Talla Wall, and several other challenging hill climbs of the 74-mile route will again give us a target for 2021.
We are doing the ride in support of Kidney Research UK who fund
a wide range of essential research including efforts to improve the early diagnosis of kidney disease and develop effective interventions to delay or prevent the progression to kidney failure; research into more effective and more tolerable dialysis for those not able to receive a transplant, and for those, such as Joseph, who have received a transplant, research focused on extending the life of the transplant and making it easier to live with by making the monitoring of transplanted kidneys less invasive and less dependent on hospital visits. Of particular note, they have continued to provide funding for the exceptional work of Professor Rachel Lennon's team at the University of Manchester, who are researching the damaged structure of the kidney's filtration system of patients with Alport Syndrome in an attempt to identify targets for effective treatments. They also contribute valuable funding to Alport UK, a really excellent patient-led organisation dedicated to facilitating a support and information network for all those affected by Alport Syndrome, the kidney disease responsible for the decline of Joseph’s kidney function and subsequent kidney failure.
As was the case for many charities Kidney Research UK’s
fund-raising capacity was seriously diminished during the past year, putting at risk much of this vital research and support.
We know that many of our friends and family gave generously
the last time we did this ride in 2019 so we are asking that you give whatever you can this year to support this extremely worthy cause.
