Story
Every year people make dangerous journeys to reach our shore and claim asylum. They have fled conflict and persecution and are desperately seeking safety. But the system they rely on all too often fails them. Instead of safety and shelter, they can be left hungry and homeless on our streets whilst they wait, sometimes years, to get a decision that in many cases is wrong. Its unfair and ineffective. It doesn't have to be this way. I believe a future is possible where those forced to flee the homes they loved receive compassion, a fair decision, essential support and help to rebuild their lives. I've joined Refugee Action's Race for Refugees to make my move and race to change the system for good.
Having volunteered with Bristol Refugee Rights throughout my third year at university, I have seen first-hand the immense mental and physical challenges asylum seekers and refugees face. The British government are clearly unwilling to show any sliver of compassion for these people. They are forced out of their homes and make the journey to the UK for a new future, hope of a better life, only to be met with hostility. £37.75/week is not enough to live off. Refugee Action fights 'to make sure that the UK shows refugees and people seeking asylum the best of humanity.'
Throughout October I aim to walk and run a total of 400km (about 13km/day) before work, after work and on weekends. On average I currently walk about 8km/day, with 400km as my target I plan to do an extra 5k walk or run every day of October. I would love to raise £200 for this amazing cause and need your help to do it! Any donation is significant and every donation matters. If you are not in a position to donate during these exceptionally tough times, please educate yourself and those around on the asylum system in the UK! The more awareness there is, the more pressure the government will be under to protect the human rights of these vulnerable people.
