We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

On a Friday afternoon in June, I got a call to say that my mum was found at home having collapsed; she was rushed to hospital where it was discovered that she had a brain tumour.  She was scheduled for brain surgery, but told that she had to wait a month and so was sent home as, because of Covid, it was deemed safer for her than being in hospital.  During that month, however, her health deteriorated and she developed a tremor in her left arm, while also losing about 80% of her sight.

Before she finally underwent the surgery, we were warned that, because of the location of the tumour, she might lose all her sight as the optic nerve ran through the tumour and also that she might have to learn to walk and talk again.  Although the surgery was scheduled to take eight hours, it actually lasted 14 and a half.  I was told it had been a success, but she was kept sedated for a few days and it wasn’t until about three weeks later, once the nerves had had time to repair themselves, that we found out the surgeons had saved her sight.  She underwent physio to help her re-learn how to walk again.

After having spent a month in hospital, she was allowed home to continue her rehab.  Her progress was where it should have been for the first two weeks, but then she started to suffer from a persistent headache that got worse and worse.  Thankfully, with the help of Lisa Cunningham, a close family friend, we were able to convince her to go back into hospital where it was discovered that she had a serious infection in her skull.  Due to the severity of the infection, a piece of skull had to be removed and she is currently still in hospital, under observation, receiving a cocktail of antibiotics to help fight off the infection.
