Story
I am raising awareness and support for Bloody Good Period, a charity getting period products to asylum seekers, refugees and those who can't afford them. Over the last year or so I’ve sort of been through the run of it regarding just about anything to do with womens health. Even writing that makes me uncomfortable which is stupid, but I feel like if I just even write something small then I can help others.
I was lucky enough to be selected for a student leadership programme run by the council of deans. Which I’m proud to be a part of and it’s been really challenging. For my own piece of mind, I needed something with a conclusive endpoint, which is why I chose to do a physical challenge; Sca Fell Pike. Its the highest mountain in the UK. I’ve managed to rope in a few family members which is great, and I am very lucky to have such a great support network.
My experiences have given me a small window into the world of suffering that many women less fortunate than me are put through unnecessarily. Women’s health is underfunded and under-researched. The result is that it often takes way too long to diagnose women’s health issues.
Many women suffer chronic pain that’s often misunderstood, ignored and misdiagnosed. These issues are severely underestimated. I’ve always been reluctant to consider my health as a priority and ask for help (which is ironic considering I study nursing). If this is the case for a 20-year-old white woman with a private education I can’t even begin to imagine how frightening and intimidating asking for help about periods would be for a refugee or asylum seeker. This charity is incredible, they help educate and support vulnerable women and I am very proud to be fundraising for them.
A big thank you to those who have donated already, I’m very grateful. It would be amazing if people could share this page to help raise awareness.
