“THURSTABLE DOES NOT DIRECTLY COLLECT MONEY THROUGH JUST GIVING. ALL DONATIONS GO DIRECTLY TO OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES”
As the war deepens in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis unfolds, students have understandably been asking questions about the invasion, its origins and, movingly, about what they can do to help the Ukrainian people. We do not have to do extraordinary things, but there are ordinary things that we can do as a community to help. On Wednesday morning, all students at Thurstable School watched an assembly that gave them an insight into the history of Russia and the events that have led to the invasion to contextualise events for our students.
On Wednesday lunchtime, students volunteered to form the Ukraine Crisis Student Committee. We welcomed over 30 students from year groups 7-13 to discuss what they could do to help with the effort. The students quickly rallied into action, forming student-led sub-teams who quickly began drafting ideas to help fundraise and collect essential items to donate. Ideas ranged from sharing and promoting validated news to avoid misinformation to arranging fundraising events. Students plan to write letters of support and good will to unknown recipients to send their wishes to those affected. Fetes and ‘bring & buy’ sales were also planned and will be due to take place soon.
Assistant Headteacher, Mr Turner said: “We are proud of our students for their effort to support those affected by the crisis. Times like these really highlight the kindness and generosity within our community and in every one of us, restoring faith in the power of community spirit.”
