Story

As 99.9% of you know, Laura and I lost our dad to motor neurone disease last November. THIS November, Laura and I are coming to terms with the fact that – completely out of the blue – our incredible mum has been diagnosed with a rather horrendous case of lung cancer. And yes, as I'm sure you can imagine, it's extremely shit and incredibly scary...

After being completely blown away by the phenomenal donations and general love with everything concerning our dad, I wanted to come up with a new – and much more interactive – film-based challenge after the fun we had with the Die Hard one (search the hashtag #ThrowHard on Twitter if you missed that one) last year.

So here's the deal: you are in control. You are going to choose the films I watch, be they amazing (Fight Club!), terrible (Jack And Jill!), or just something you want to make me watch (Shrek The Musical!) to curate the movie marathon to end all movie marathons! It's £5 (or dollars or euros or whatever currency you use) per film, so if you fancy personally choosing a little batch of films for £20, well, that'd be four films of your choice. If you donate £50, you can choose me 10 films. It's a pretty simple idea. I'll be watching the films in the order I receive your donations/film choices and will be sure to let you know when it is 'your turn'. I want to make this as interactive as possible, so will be using the hashtag #ThrowAFilm as, well, you quite literally will be throwing films at me. You have a week (until 23:59 on Friday 10 November) until I close this donation/suggestion page and can find some inspiration at the very bottom of this page if you need it.

If you'd prefer, you can donate by text. In that case, just message me the film/s of your choice along with a screenshot confirming your donation. (Text 'JACX57 £5' to 70070. Replace the £5 with £10, £15, etc, if kindly donating more.) I'm so excited to get this underway, and really looking forward to seeing what films people will choose... (Do I hear £35 to watch Chappie seven times in a row?! £15 for a Ben Mendelsohn trilogy?!)

Until this point, I'd been one of the lucky few without any experience of cancer. To everyone who has gone through anything similar to me, I am now sending you more love than ever before. Let's fight to help find a cure.

(A random selection of films I haven't seen if you need some inspiration: GoodFellas; Gone With The Wind; Apocalypse Now; It's A Wonderful Life; Reservoir Dogs; Ben-Hur; Lawrence Of Arabia; Oldboy; My Neighbour Totoro; A Clockwork Orange; The Thin Red Line; Full Metal Jacket; Amadeus; LA Confidential; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang; Princess Mononoke; Scarface; Doctor Strangelove; Raging Bull; The King Of Comedy; Chinatown; Heat; Dazed And Confused; Linklater's Before Trilogy; Serpico; Harold And Maude; The Color Purple; Empire Of The Sun; Almost Famous; Magnolia; Mulholland Drive; Boogie Nights; Jackie Brown; The Warriors; Apocalypto; Blackhat; Bullhead; Catch Me Daddy; Master And Commander; Michael Clayton; Braveheart; The New World; Precious; A Royal Affair; A Serious Man; The Squid And The Whale; Sucker Punch.)
