Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
In July 2020, our Dad was diagnosed with Multiple Systems Atrophy, a rare neurological disorder, which is caused by degenerative or atrophy of nerve cells in several areas of the brain. This can result in problems with movement, balance, and autonomic functions of the body.
Dads quality of life has significantly deteriorated over the past year. He has difficulty walking, his speech has become slurred, and at times he has difficulty swallowing and experiences dizzyness. Daily living tasks have become challenging to him and this unfortunately will continue to become more difficult.
Recent research suggests MSA affects 4.4 people per 100,000. Currently there is no cure, it is a terminal illness and the only way we can change this is to bring awareness to this illness and raise money to help support research into finding a cure.
In honour of Dad, we are going to run the Edinburgh half marathon in May 2021. Our cousin, Dads niece, Angela Thomson, and our cousin Colin Summers have both decided to run the half marathon with us. The money we raise will go to The MSATrust, the only charity in the UK and Ireland who support people living with MSA. Not only do they promote and support research into MSA to increase understanding, find the cause and ultimately a cure, but most importantly they support people living with the illness, their carers, families etc.
If you could help us raise awareness by sharing our story and sponsoring our run allowing us to raise funds for this essential charity then we will be forever grateful.
All our love, Kelly, Darren and Kara x
