London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·
Hey! My name is Thommi, and I am a mental health advocate,
joy chaser, and one badd ass wife and auntie. I am also a runner. Embracing this title has been one of the more challenging titles to embrace. I never competed in sports. I was overweight until my late thirties. I never considered myself an athlete though I started running in my early 30s – completing numerous half marathons and two full marathons.
I am excited to run the London marathon on behalf of Tommy’s
to raise awareness of the disparities in maternal health for black women. Black women are four times more likely to experience pregnancy complications and pregnancy loss, including miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, and infant death. As a mental health therapist, I have worked with numerous Black women who have struggled with depression, grief, and anxiety due to pregnancy complications. I
hope that partnering with and fundraising on behalf of Tommy’s, an organization that funds research on the causes of baby loss, will improve maternity care for Black women and other marginalized populations.
