This page has been set up in memory of our beautiful little Thomas. Thomas was a lively, inquisitive and healthy 2 year old boy who loved life and did everything with either a huge smile or a mischievous grin on his face.  Thomas loved his big brother and really enjoyed attending nursery. 

Thomas developed chickenpox like most children do and consequently spent a few days poorly on the sofa but seemed to be on the mend. 

Suddenly Thomas became unresponsive at home on the Tuesday evening on the 23rd June 2015 and quickly went into cardiac arrest. Despite an enormous effort from Thomas’s Auntie, the paramedics and the resus team at Wigan Infirmary Thomas passed away that evening. 

Tests have since revealed that Thomas had developed Group A Streptococcal Sepsis . Fighting chicken pox had left Thomas weak and suppressed his immune system, leaving him unable to fight the deadly infection. His little body was just not able to fight anymore. The speed that Thomas was taken from us was absolutely staggering.  

We called Thomas " our little sunshine " because of his happy and fun nature , he lit up our lives . We have had a permanent shadow cast over us from the loss of our precious Son, but one positive that will keep us going is that we can work alongside The UK Sepsis Trust to raise funds and awareness to prevent other families from having to suffer like we do on a daily basis. 

When we were told that Thomas had Sepsis we had no idea what it was and I suspect that a lot of people affected by it hadn’t heard of it either.  

Over the next year or so, probably for much longer, we will be doing various fundraising events in Memory of Thomas, creating Thomas’ Legacy. 

What Is Sepsis? 

Sepsis is a life-threatening illness caused by your body’s response to an infection. Your immune system protects you from many illnesses and infections, but it’s also possible for it to go into overdrive in response to an infection. 

Sepsis develops when the chemicals the immune system releases into the bloodstream to fight an infection cause inflammation throughout the entire body instead. Severe cases of sepsis can lead to septic shock, which is a medical emergency. 

How can we help?  

Every year in the UK there are 150,000 cases of Sepsis, resulting in a staggering 44,000 deaths – more than bowel, breast and colon cancer combined. The UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) was established as a charity in 2012 with the objective of saving 12,500 lives every year. We are committed to changing the way the NHS deals with Sepsis, to increasing public awareness and supporting those affected by Sepsis. Every penny you donate is valuable in helping us achieve our goals, together we can help to mend Sepsis.

 It is estimated that it costs just £90 to save a life from Sepsis 

£5 provides an information booklet to relatives of 10 patients admitted to ITU 

£10 will allow us to distribute 200 leaflets to a GP surgery 

£999 will provide one hospital with a 'Sepsis pack' to aid implementation
