Story
I've applied to take part in the London Marathon for many years and am happy to say that this year I have finally been accepted. Training is well underway and the runs are getting longer by the week. I hope that starting the fundraising process will motivate me through the many tiring miles!
I'm raising money for Arthritis Research UK. There are about 10 million arthritis sufferers in the UK and it affects people of all ages. It's one of the most common forms of disability, and results in joint pain, swelling and limitation of mobility. Decreased mobility can make it difficult for a person to be physically active, contributing to second order effects such as an increased risk of obesity, high cholesterol, vulnerability to heart disease and an increased risk of depression.
Arthritis Research UK invests in breakthrough treatments, the best information and vital support for everyone affected by arthritis. Their mission is to prevent the onset of arthritis, develop a cure for arthritis and transform the lives of those with arthritis (now and in the future) by building, applying and sharing knowledge.
Arthritis Research UK is a cause close to me my family. Both of my parents spent their medical careers specialising in its treatment and I am no exception in knowing a number of personal friends and family who are affected. In particular I'm running the race and raising money in memory of my father, who passed away in early 2017. Anyone who knew Dad knows that he wasn't exactly a keen runner himself (!), but given rheumatism was his area of medical expertise, I'm confident he would be very supportive of the cause.
Thanks very much indeed for donating. It means a great deal to me and I have no doubt it will make a big difference to those who are affected by the condition.
