Story

Update

We completed 443km in nearly 7 hours ride time, though it was worth it to raise such an amazing amount for a great charity. Thank you to everyone who supported us, we couldn't have done it without you.

The Background

After the recent announcement for Lockdown 2 me, Charles and my Dad thought it would be a bit depressing to sit back and wait for it all to blow over without at least trying to chip in to help. We discussed potentially lending some ideas to help with formulating a vaccine, but then I remembered that I spent most of my time in science class pea shooting paper spit balls onto the ceiling. Although this work was groundbreaking in its own way, the skill would sadly not help push forward immunization technology. Alternative options needed to be considered.

We landed on the idea that now might be a good time to try fundraise and contribute towards a charity, and the Covid-19 response is an area in need of help at the moment.

The - What are you paying for

In return for your donation we will be using our indoor bikes to cycle the equivalent of 107 km (66m) on a virtual route called The Mega Pretzel (https://zwiftinsider.com/route/the-mega-pretzel/). I'd usually jump at the chance of being offered a pretzel, however, the only similarity between this route and the food is that it's likely to be salty through the taste of my tears, and my stomach will probably hurt afterwards, along with everything else. In summary, in exchange for your donation, we will be putting in some hard work, and parts of us may never work the same again. We will also try to share updates about the ride as we go, and if the tech gods are kind to us we may be able to livestream at least some of the ride. We're keeping it indoors to help in the effort to slow the spread of the virus, and also because it's suddenly bloody freezing outside.

The Charity

We Love Manchester is coordinating the effort to get money to the Manchester groups and charities responding to urgent community needs during Covid-19. They aim to get the money straight to the frontline to keep people safe, fed and looked after. We have an opportunity to come together and help. These organisations need cash to continue to do their great work. If you're at home thinking about how you can help, please make a donation today. We know many people are being hit financially by the crisis so please only give if you can afford to.
